Gold is the main currency that Illustrious Order of Sympanomancers uses to pay their emp-... brave adventurers.

Gold has no intrinsic value other than that racially speaking adventurers love hoarding it. Expensive magic items can cost hundreds or thousands of gold. Drinks, meals, tips and all generally cost 1 gold, though you can always pay more to show how rich you are.
